Holiday DIY: How to Make a Star Wars Gingerbread House

One of my family’s annual traditions is making a gingerbread house. We love the opportunity to express our creativity and create something entirely new each year. In the past, some of our favorite projects have been an UP! gingerbread house and a Doctor Who gingerbread house.

This year, there was no question that we had to create a Star Wars gingerbread house. (Who else can’t wait for the new movie?) We brought to life some of the most iconic characters and symbols from the series, including the Millenium Falcon, a storm trooper, and even Yoda himself.

This project was so much fun and as always, the kids had a blast creating it. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own Star Wars gingerbread house from scratch:

Step by Step: Making a Star Wars Gingerbread House

SHOPPING LIST
Fondant (comes in many colors, but you can use food coloring to change it, too)
Super white confectionery coating
Pretzels
Gingerbread cookie dough
Silver bubblegum
Small silver ball cake decorations
Bright white candy melts
Brown sugar
Pre-made gingerbread house

PART ONE: THE CHARACTERS

The day before, leave a tray of pretzels out. When they’re stale, they are even more rigid and easier to work with. Also, melt some confectionery coating. You can purchase it in a variety of colors, but since you only need it to hold the skeleton of the characters together in this project, it doesn’t matter what color you choose.

Start by making the basic skeleton of the characters with the pretzels and confectionary coating. This will give you a sturdier base for your characters so they don’t fall over when you place them in the display.  Let it stand overnight.

Next, roll out the fondant and make pieces to wrap around the pretzel figure. For some characters, only one layer of fondant will be necessary. Others, such as Chewbacca, will need 2 layers each done day apart so they can dry out.

For Chewbacca, the last layer should be done with a garlic press to get the look of fur.

To make Yoda, use green fondant for his body and white rolled fondant for his coat.

PART TWO: THE MILLENIUM FALCON

The structure of the Millenium Falcon is simply cut from a home baked gingerbread cookie. Let it dry out for few days so it will be easier to work with.

Cut rolled white fondant into squares and triangles and place them throughout the ship, securing it with the confectionery coating. Use silver bubblegum for portals and the satellite.

PART THREE: THE HOUSE

Use a pre-made gingerbread house and cover it in white chocolate rounds.

On one side of the house, you can create a Fighter plane from gingerbread by shaping the dough before baking it and using a pretzel to hold it all together. Use the small silver balls again to cover the wings.

For the base of the house, use white icing and cover it in brown sugar to make it look like sand. Then, cut out letters from strips of rolled red fondant to add the final (and one of the most important) touches to your Star Wars gingerbread house: “May the force be with you.”
