6 Creative Ways to Transform a Small Outdoor Space

Summer is the perfect time to bring a little life to your patio, backyard, or even a balcony. I love looking at ideas for how these areas can be transformed, just in time for all those seasonal gatherings. A small outdoor space might make you think your design options are limited, but there are still so many ways to create your own oasis. All it takes is a bit of inspiration and creativity. If you’re looking for ideas on how to refresh or reimagine your own space, I’ve gathered six ideas to share with you here.

Start from the Ground Up

I feel like the foundation of a well-designed outdoor space is the ground beneath it, and it can often be overlooked. With a small area, you can add a bold tile and watch how it completely transforms the entire vibe. If you’re looking for another way to make a statement with pattern, you might simply add a lively outdoor rug. With a grassy area, you can explore adding in pavers.

Plant an Herb Garden

Tight spaces still absolutely have potential for incorporating greenery. With just a bit of room, you can gather a few pots and get gardening! My favorite way to make the most out of a small gardening area is to create an herb garden. Basil, cilantro, and rosemary are just a few that do well outdoors. It’s a wonderful way to keep a few different plants that aren’t too difficult to maintain, and to add to your cooking.

Decorate Vertically

When adding decor to a small outdoor area, you’ll want to be a bit strategic. Rather than overwhelming the space with too many elements spread across a wall, think of drawing the eye upwards with a vertical design. This is a great way to add some character with a gallery wall, without making it feel cramped. It’s the perfect solution for creating a more elevated feel.

Choose Multipurpose Furniture

It’s a great idea to make sure the furniture you choose is more than just stylish. While folding chairs and tables are usually ideal, take it a step further with multifunctional pieces. This could be poufs that serve as extra seating or a side table. You could also consider incorporating a bench that has storage inside. The goal is to keep the area as versatile as possible for your own convenience.

Opt for Cozy Lighting

No matter how small or large a space might be, outdoor lighting has potential to boost the mood. I love when lighting maintains a warm, cozy energy into the night. This is especially wonderful for hosting guests. You’ll want to make sure you have a comfortably lit conversation area. It’s easy to add string lights you enjoy, or even look into bold outdoor fixtures.

Create Extra Privacy

An outdoor area separated by green and white striped curtains.

With any outdoor spot, extra privacy can always be an added plus. Depending on what kind of outdoor space you’re trying to transform, you can choose from different options. You might add a hedge, screen, hanging plants, or curtains. I personally love the feeling of some lightweight outdoor curtains. They add the option to keep the area divided or kept open to a nice outdoor breeze.

It can be easy to forget about the potential more intimate spaces really have. However, I think all it takes is gathering a few new ideas to try. It’s so much fun to expand any design trends you might already love into the outdoors. Do you have any thoughts about changing up a small outdoor space at your home? I hope you’re excited to try something new.

Warmly,
Megan
