Chinoiserie is a style based on Chinese design that encompasses patterns, art, furniture, and decor. According to Dictionary.com, it is “the imitation or evocation of Chinese motifs and techniques in Western art, furniture, and architecture, especially in the 18th century.”
While chinoiserie encompasses all types of Chinese-inspired decor, most people associate it with the beautiful, elaborate patterns found in textiles and artwork that often depict Eastern foliage and birds. These patterns are a lovely way to add some elegance and character to your home. Besides those patterns and similar artwork, though, chinoiserie also pertains to decor such as foo dogs, certain bamboo chairs, and other elements inspired by the ancient culture.
