Marcel Wanders is a visionary. As co-founder of the successful design label Moooi and the art director, product and interior designer of his powerhouse studio (which employs around 50 international design specialists), Wanders has made a name for himself in the industry as one of the most prolific and innovative designers.
The design that first brought worldwide attention back in 1996 was his famous knotted chair. Since then, he has exploded on the design scene and has helped realize over 1700+ projects for private clients and premium brands such as Alessi, Bisazza, KLM, Flos, Swarovski, Puma and many others. Even if you can’t afford his price tag, you can stay in one of the hotels brought to life by his unique eye for design such as the Mondrian Hotel South Beach and Kameha Grand hotel in Bonn.
Here are just a few of my favorite examples of his work that never fail to inspire me.
Wander’s design of the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is nothing short of spectacular, from the scale of the lighting to the incredible use of pattern.
A lounge at the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht mixes modern lines with rich patterns and textures.
The rooms are full of personality with graphic art on the walls and more luxurious patterns mixed with modern shapes.
This winding staircase is one of the highlights of the the Mondrian Hotel South Beach, boasting a banister that looks like lace.
High contrast creates a super hip and dreamy looking interior at the the Mondrian Hotel South Beach.
Strong contrasts are one of Wander’s strong suits, as seen at the Moda Mall in Bahrain in classic black and white.
Pattern and texture collide in this fantastical private home.
The furniture is a part of the walls, looking as though they are emerging right from them.
The mirror gives the illusion of a two-legged desk being a full one. It gives the space a very “Through the Looking Glass” vibe.
Old and new come together in this space that is at once modern and classic at once, one of his favorite juxtapositions to play with.
The work of Marcel Wanders is continuously imaginative and always inspiring.
