Toile de jouy (or often simply known as toile) has been around for centuries and is still popular in interior design today. The pattern consists of a white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern depicts a scene, usually of a pastoral nature. It has a very sophisticated look that is timeless. It usually looks best in small doses as it can be a very bold pattern; however, when handled cleverly, it can cover large areas (such as a wallpaper) and still look great without being too overwhelming. Here are 10 examples of toile de jouy done right.
The scene on the toile wallpaper and matching canopy pops in a deep red that has a rich and classic appeal to it.
In this bathroom, the classic pattern is depicted on tile in a cool blue. The stainless steel tub brings a modern edge to the space.
A soft lilac hints at the lovely pattern that covers just a portion of the wall, while bead board breaks it up.
Only a spot of toile is visible on the arm chairs, but it’s enough to add some extra character to this simple space.
Matching the toile curtains to the pillow cases pulls the room together. Keeping the rest simple with a white bed spread lets the toile have more of an impact.
The black and white toile pattern gives the canopy some punch and turns the bed into a focal point.
Using the pattern in pink on the headboard gives this bedroom a feminine touch that is also classic and mature.
A powder bath is one of the best places in which to use a bold pattern. You need little else to make this bathroom have a “wow” factor besides that incredible wallpaper.
The crisp blue toile livens up this dining room and fits into the fresh vibe of the space.
There is a lot of toile wallpaper in this space, but the soft color and the openness of the space with plenty of other solid colors allows it to make a statement without being too much for the eye.
Toile de jouy is a timeless pattern you can be sure won’t go out of style any time soon.
