Setting the Perfect Summer Table

Summer is right around the corner and that means backyard barbecues and picnics by the pool. It is a season marked by bright fresh colors, lively patterns and having a ton of fun in the sun. When I am putting together a summer table setting, these are the things I keep in mind and they always lead me in the right direction. Incorporate elements from nature since the summer is a time when people love to be outdoors, such as wood, twine and plenty of fresh flowers. Patterns are big in summer style, so break out those polka dots, checkers and stripes. And of course, nothing is more summer-y than bright, bold colors.

What could be more quintessentially summer than red and white polka dots AND checkers? All the white keeps the patterns from being overwhelming and the accessories are simple but perfect: metal pots and mason jars. Photo: Table Art

Sophistication and homespun summer charm are mixed perfectly in this table setting with Blue Danube china and a blue checkered table cloth with matching napkins. A perfect look for a summer brunch. Photo: Southern Living

The soft pink accents in the flowers and alternating striped napkins bring some elegance to the blue and white checkered table cloth. Mason jars again, a cornerstone of summertime decor! Photo: Jeanne Oliver

A quirky take on the summer table. Hammered metal plates mimic the silver polka dots in the tablecloth and the wood vases nicely break up all the metallic finishes. Photo: vtwonen

This 1950s-inspired table is so cute. The pink and turquoise color scheme harkens back to a simpler time and I love those retro clocks. Photo: Audrey & Angus

Sunflowers are a hallmark of summer and so are a perfect choice for a focal point for a summer table setting. The green napkins compliment the flowers and those little boxes are a great idea for surprising your guests with a gift and name card. Photo: Style Linx

Summer table settings don’t have to be brightly colored. This elegant table setting kept it simple with mostly white, using color sparingly. That wood plank is a brilliant centerpiece. Photo: Nine + Sixteen

Chic and elegant is how I’d describe this summer table. Those retro chairs look cool and comfortable, and the pink flowers pop beautifully against the black and white stripes. Photo: Martha Stewart Weddings
