Making a Striking Statement with Contrast

Creating contrast in a space is a smart way to make your decor more dynamic and interesting to the eye. It’s a timeless trick that can be applied to any space very easily. Because it’s a visual element, there are several ways to accomplish it, so it’s all a matter of the choices you make in color, texture, and pattern.

All you have to do to decorate with contrast is to mix two opposing elements together. Color is the most popular way to create contrast, such as with black and white. You can also use contrasting textures, like a smooth surface mixed with a rougher texture, or even with patterns, such as placing a boldly patterned pillow on a solid colored sofa.

There are so many ways to play around with contrast, but I’ve gathered 10 ideas to inspire you and show you how well this technique can work in a space.

10 Ideas for Wall Art Above a Sofa

The sofa is the most important piece in a living room. It sets the tone for the whole space and can bring a lot of character to it depending on the shape, color and texture. However, if your sofa is up against a wall, the seating is not where the decorating ends.

The wall above the sofa is as much a part of the scene as the sofa itself. A blank wall can detract from the sofa, making it look like it’s floating there, small and out of place. You can solve this issue with the right wall art. The wall art above the sofa can pull the entire room together and make the sofa look more grounded in the space. It finishes everything off, making it look more complete.

Sofa wall art is also a great way to also infuse some more charm and personality into your living room. There are tons of creative ways to take advantage of this big, empty space, so check out these 10 to get inspired.

Creating a Bold Statement with Colorful Headboards

One of the easiest ways to make a statement in a bedroom is with the headboard. The bed is always the focal point of the bedroom, so if you want to create an impact in the design, that’s where you want to do it. A headboard gives you the opportunity to make that stylish impact without necessarily spending a lot of money.

There are a lot of great headboard ideas out there, but some of the easiest to replicate are ones in an eye-catching color. Color is a very powerful element to use in a space, so using it on the headboard will draw your eye to that focal point and set off the whole space. Even if you only do a pop of color in this one area, it can have a stunning impact on the overall design.

Here are 10 colorful headboard ideas to inspire you and show you what is possible with this simple trick:

The Classic and Luxurious Look of Velvet Decor

Velvet is one of the most glamorous, luxurious textures in design. It’s a timeless look that instantly elevates the style of any space in which it is used, even if it is only present in a small accent, such as a pillow or throw. While you may associate this fabric with an outdated and slightly over-the-top style, you’d be surprised just how modern and gender-neutral velvet can be.

It looks great in a variety of spaces and on a variety of different styles of furniture. You can go traditional with a classic piece such as a chesterfield sofa, but it also looks really cool when paired with modern shapes and decor. You can even play with the color by going with something bold and vivid or even pair it with masculine pieces to make it an unexpected accent.

If you want to infuse some glamour into a space, even if just in a small way, try one of these velvet decor ideas:

Home Tour: Brigitte Bardot’s French Country House

Actress Brigitte Bardot recently listed her French country house for $5.6 million and it’s exactly the kind of chateau in which you would imagine a screen legend to call home.

The stunning manor captures all the beauty and character of the French countryside with a stone facade, luscious green landscaping, and views that will take your breath away. Inside, there are eight bedrooms and a private library, and outside you’ll find two infinity pools, a private terrace, an entertaining pavilion, and a spacious loggia overlooking the Estérel Mountains and Cannes Bay.

Ms. Bardot purchased the mansion in 1958 and renovated it between 1998 and 2011. While the property has been updated, it still maintains its original charm and is a truly magnificent place of which we’re privileged to get a peek inside.

After you finish looking at this home tour courtesy of Architectural Digest, I’d be surprised if you aren’t itching for a trip to the French countryside…
