Home Tour: Ellen Pompeo’s Modern and Rustic Vacation Home

A little under a decade ago, actress Ellen Pompeo purchased a property in Sag Harbor to use as a vacation home. She had originally planned on using the existing structure – a charming cabin built by a civil rights activist lawyer – as a guest home and build a new, main home alongside it, but plans ended up changing when an opportunity for another home in the West Coast came up.

Instead of building a new structure, Ellen updated the original home with her own modern aesthetic, mixing the rustic nature of the original cabin with a streamlined flair. The result is a unique home – a “modern barn” as Ellen describes it – that is as comfortable as it is stylish.

10 Neutral Bathrooms That Are Simple and Elegant

What I love about a bathroom with a neutral palette is how effortlessly clean and relaxing it feels. No matter what combination of neutrals you choose, it will always have a sense of elegance and ease about it.

Many people automatically assume that neutrals make decor boring, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. As long as you incorporate interesting patterns, shapes, and design in the space, a neutral bathroom can be full of character and charm. If you’re someone who likes design to be subtle but has been wanting to try something new, it can actually give you even more of a sense of freedom to choose dramatic patterns and statement pieces if you present them in a neutral palette.

Neutrals really suit a bathroom well, too, because they are clean, relaxing, and great for resale. Here are 10 neutral bathrooms to show you how versatile this palette can be.

The Intricate, Classic Beauty of Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie is a style based on Chinese design that encompasses patterns, art, furniture, and decor. According to Dictionary.com, it is “the imitation or evocation of Chinese motifs and techniques in Western art, furniture, and architecture, especially in the 18th century.”

While chinoiserie encompasses all types of Chinese-inspired decor, most people associate it with the beautiful, elaborate patterns found in textiles and artwork that often depict Eastern foliage and birds. These patterns are a lovely way to add some elegance and character to your home. Besides those patterns and similar artwork, though, chinoiserie also pertains to decor such as foo dogs, certain bamboo chairs, and other elements inspired by the ancient culture.

Here are some stylish examples of chinoiserie to give you some ideas and inspiration.

Playing with Shapes: Opting for a Round Mirror in a Bathroom

The most common choice for a bathroom mirror is a rectangle cut, but there is one very simple alteration that can make a big impact on the space: opting for a round mirror.

Round mirrors are less expected, so they instantly capture your attention. The classic shape feels elegant and chic and suits any design style you can think of. You can find them with a variety of frames to suit your space, from bamboo to gold and everything in between. They’re also great for small spaces because they take up less wall space.

If you are looking for a way to uplevel your bathroom’s style without spending a lot of money, a round mirror is a great way to do just that. It’s a quick switch that will make a statement.

Here are 10 bathrooms with round mirrors to offer you some ideas and inspiration.
