Giving a Room Character with Paneled Walls

Every room offers four fabulous blank canvases: the walls. There are so many things you can do to transform them to help create a beautiful space. One of my favorite looks is paneled walls. What I love about them are how simple they can be while still bringing character, depth, and a touch of luxury to a space.

They are also incredibly versatile. You can keep it simple or get creative with the trim, insets, and material. You can go rustic with exposed wood or high glamour with gloss or metallic. They can cover half the wall, an accent wall, or an entire room. The options are unlimited.

Though they look expensive, paneled walls can be done on a budget if you’re willing to do a DIY project. There are tons of tutorials on the internet, so it’s just a matter of deciding what look you want and putting in some elbow grease.

Here are 10 paneled wall ideas in various styles to give you some inspiration:

Book Styling Ideas That Bring the Charm

When it comes to adding the finishing touches to your home in the form of accessories, sometimes the best decor are things you already have lying around or being used in a different capacity. Books are a great example of this. Books with beautiful covers can be used as decor on a coffee table, bedside table, vignette, and in many other places.

What’s great about book styling is how versatile it is. No matter what size, shape or color you need, you can find them. You can stack them to make them whatever height you need, lay them upright or on their sides, vary the arrangement, mix up the colors — whatever you need to do. They are wonderfully customizable, not to mention fashionable.

Here are 10 fabulous book styling ideas to show you some of the many ways they can be used and inspire you for your home:

Decorating with Trays for Style & Organization

There are certain staples in home decorating with which you can rarely go wrong. One of those pieces is a tray. In both home staging and decorating, we use decorative trays a lot because they are so versatile (they come in myriad colors, shapes, and sizes), always bring extra style to a space, and are great at keeping smaller decor from looking cluttered.

Trays are most often used on coffee tables (or ottomans) and vanities. In a bathroom, for instance, they are wonderful for keeping perfumes and small toiletries organized in a beautiful way so your bathroom counter or vanity doesn’t get cluttered. The same goes for a living room as they can gather decor, books and magazines so the surface doesn’t look messy. Other places we love to use them are on a bed (especially in home staging), on an ottoman at the end of a bed, or on a bedside table.

Basically, they are the perfect solution if you want to have small items on a surface without a cluttered look. While accomplishing that, they also bring an extra stylish detail in their own right. Whether it’s in a color, metallic, marble or even acrylic, they’re a chic statement that makes whatever surface they are on that much more dynamic.

Here are 10 examples of decorating with trays to inspire you:

Stylish and Space-Saving Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are one of my favorite trends in recent years (also often referred to as “barn doors”). These doors are great because of their style, versatility, and space-saving ability. They can close off a small area, such as a home office or a bathroom, without taking up as much space as a traditional door and with easier installation than a pocket door.

While the barn look is the most popular at the moment, sliding doors come in a variety of styles. They can be modern, glamorous, rustic, vintage ─ you name it. Your creativity really is the limit when it comes to sliding doors. Because of this, they can also be a fun way to bring some character to a space. I particularly love it when people salvage old doors and turn them into sliding doors. It’s such a charming accent!

Installation of sliding doors on a track is a project you can tackle yourself without spending a lot of money. You can even build the door yourself if you’re up for the challenge. Here is a great tutorial from HGTV on how to build and install a sliding door.

To give you some inspiration, here are 10 ideas for sliding doors of all different shapes and sizes.

Home Tour: Jessica Chastain’s Elegant NYC Apartment

Actress Jessica Chastain has the poise, grace, and beauty of an old Hollywood movie star, so it was a lovely discovery to find that the apartment she calls home in New York City captures that same essence in its decor.

Jessica invited designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller to turn her historic apartment into a place that reflected her, and they absolutely delivered. The home is full of rich colors, lavish fabrics, and antique touches that give it a classic elegance. It is full of character without losing an ounce of sophistication. It is one of those homes that you could discover something new in every time you looked at it. There is so much going on, but it all comes together in perfect harmony to create something unique and beautiful.

There is a lovely balance of the masculine and feminine in the design. Stunning florals mix with dark woods in beautiful harmony. Similarly, some of the rooms have a dark palette, while the kitchen is bright and airy. The contrast keeps things interesting and is a great example of how you can mix all the things you love into one home when you do it with a clever hand.

Enjoy this inspiring home tour from Architectural Digest.
